Last night, we went to SF

for this event

PLANET? gathering :: July 16, 2003

Summer Wednesdays are back and in force with another choice gathering
on a gorgeous warm night at Lazslo.

We have a great combination of art and music all lined up.

Art: we'll be doing something new and unique by turning you on to some
work that's going to appear in our next issue. Santiago Vanegas is a
local photographer originally from Colombia. For the past five years,
he's been shooting editorial and his work has appeared in Surface, WIRED,
Picture Magazine, and San Francisco Magazine. Recently on a road trip
to New Mexico we asked him to take some landscape shots and what he
brought back with him was absolutely gorgeous. Some of these pictures will
figure in a special fashion feature that he's contributing to our
upcoming PEACE Issue. Santiago says what inspires him the most is light and
improbability. "Light, for the idea of it, and all it can do.
Improbability, because it's a negotiation of contradictions. And what better way
to prove that what I see in my mind is real?" Come check his work out
tonight; you won't be disappointed.

On the decks we have one of our utmost favorites. Noel Tolentino is The
DJ Formerly Known as Oh Yeah and now goes by No No. He always injects a
fresh vibe into the evening and the often stale SF DJ scene. He is
utterly eclectic, mixing it up with Rock, Nu Wave, Electro, dance, disco,
archival soul and just about anything that has a great beat and jam. His
partner in rhymes is Tony Sison formerly of Fan Club @ LiPo in
Chinatown and current member of the Kool Kidz of Death. When this DJ tandem
convenes, like they will tonight, they form one half of the EXPENSIVE
COLLECTIVE. This group is dedicated to the FUN, loaded with new jams and
trashy hits - basically everything you want to hear. Now. In stereo.

As always, we look forward to seeing you there.

Lisa, a co committee ambassador from the AAM called me around 10:15pm
to tell me about a new gallery opening at 14th and Mission.

The place was happening. it was hip, and raw. It was packed with some Mission Artist type - hiposies; most of which probably had a clean, middle class upbringing from some surburb or little town. The irony of it all.

so many people. I wonder though, if any of these people really care about art, or they just really into a scene.

We left @ 11pm

long drive to the East Bay; the lone affordable(?) place in the Bay Area.

tired afterwards.

What's even more amazing is the boom in prices in the bay area.

Case in point: we looked at house in Castro Valley on Judy Street. 3 bd 2 ba. 1300-1400 sq ft. built 1950-55 (can't remember exactly)

it was listed as $449,500

the current owners bought it in 1999 for around $225 -250k

HOLY GUACAMOLE!

househunting in the burbs: why do all surburban developments look the same? a 3 bedroom and 2 bath 1600 sq feet place in Union City now goes for $550k.
There is no creativity in surburban dwellings at all. Why can't houses look like the one in http://www.dwellmag.com/magazine/current_TOC.html ..

Last night was super cool.

I left work early ( 6:35pm) to check out http://www.feriaurbanasf.com/home.html. Lizelle Bucoy Green proprietor of Petite Feast Greeting Cards http://www.petitefeast.com/ emailed me about the event.

My girlfriend had her Kaplan class, so I had to go solo. But I almost never go solo, so I invited Jennifer from CNET and Jennifer from Google.

DJs, food, drinks, local artists and designers. what's not to miss. My pinoy friend said he wasn't going because it was too "white" for him. Good looking people were all around.

So what kind impression does one get of a girl who only frequents Marina, Cow Hollow and Pac Heights bars?

.... hmm.. not sure.

One could ascertain several things... but only honestly, one shouldn't judge another person because they hang out at certain places.

Every person is evolving. People do things for a reason. As a single girl, safety can be found in good, clean places. Does anyone hang out on 3rd Street in the Bay View district?

Don't be prejudice.

On Monday night, I had to go back to San Francisco for my meeting with Asian Art Museum folks.
We met at the Jade Bar. I had the Jade version of the Mojito- Sumo jito; it used vokda and triple sec as oppossed to rum in the original. It was quite tasty.

The Jade bar is very cool. It's very small and cozy but has 3 levels of zen like vibe. The main window, which is about 20 feet long doubles as a waterfall.

The water drains to a pool on the basement level. Orchids adorned the place. It's HIP to be Asian!

I found out that last Art After Hours that our little group helps promote lost $20k from the April event!! .. Yikes!! Like Milli Vanilli I blame it on the rain! It was pouring cats and dogs that night. I think they were expecting over 2500 people that night. Only 1700 people showed up. Of which 200 people were comp'd. So only 1500 people paid.

So I was given these flyers to pass out.

Before returning back to the East Bay... I stopped off at our old loft. 1800 Bryant Street.

It was fresh in my mind that I use to live here. It was weird. the street was quiet; days old newspaper flying about....
I punched in the door code and I dropped off the flyers for the next Art After Hours.

Did I miss my old place? Not really. Although i love the location of our old loft I'm glad I left. I look forward to own a piece of land. So I can build my own loft when I renovate an old house.

You can't build out or up in a loft building ( or glorified condo building ).

One thing is for sure. Property in SF will almost always appreciates especially if you live in desirable neighborhoods
